Sanitary Sewers and Storm Sewers are two different types of sewers that people tend to get mix up, however, it is important to know the difference between sanitary and storm sewers to prevent any kind of damage that could cause a problem to the public. For instance, a sanitary sewer is a system that carries waste or sewage from bathrooms, sink, kitchens, and any other plumbing components to a wastewater treatment plant where it gets treated, filtered, and cleaned up [1]. A storm sewer is a system that is designed to carry all the extra rainfall runoff water into storm drains or underground pipes where is discharged into local streams, rivers, or oceans without being treated [1]. That is why it is important to understand that storm …show more content…

Sanitary sewer overflows could cause problems to the environment and the people. EPA has determined that Sanitary Sewer Overflows (SSOs) is caused by poor sewer system management and could pose substantial health problems and environmental challenges [2]. The reason why SSOs could happen is because the sewers could be too small to carry big waste, or the pipes could be blocked, broken or cracked. Some of the health risks that SSOs could present if touched or smell could be bacteria like viruses, protozoa (parasitic organisms), helminths (intestinal worms), and boroughs (inhaled molds and fungi) [2]. The aspect of fluid mechanics or applied hydraulics of this issue is that the pipes from the sanitary sewer systems could tend to overflow if the pipe systems are not working and could lead contamination. Not only could SSOs could cause damage, but it could also be expensive when trying to clean up the mess that the waste does. It is important for the property to be cleaned thoroughly and disinfected to make sure there is no risk of any diseases. Cleanup could be expensive for homeowners and municipalities depending on the type of things that need to be disinfected. A way to prevent this would be to keep a check on the sanitary sewer systems and if any problem occurs, to fix it as soon as possibly to prevent any SSOs that could later be
