Rachel Richman Microbiology 485 27 March 2024 Prospectus With the objective of demonstrating the knowledge and skills I have acquired in the Microbiology Program at NDSU, I will be aiding in research in the Geddes Lab for my Capstone Experience. Under the guidance of Dr. Barney Geddes, alongside the mentorship of graduate student Natalie Visich, I anticipate a valuable experience full of learning. In particular, I am curious about the pace of research. As someone who has done little research, my understanding is limited. My only research experience is from the course Critical Skills in Microbiology, which I took during my sophomore year at NDSU. This course taught me that there are different stages to the process of research, and it can take a long time to see the work payoff and answer research questions. As of April, well in advance of the official start date, I have already secured a position within the lab and initiated preliminary work. I received a tour of Van Es, the location of the Geddes Lab, and was introduced to my many colleagues. Throughout the summer, I will be actively engaged in lab activities, hoping to familiarize myself with lab protocols, acquaint myself with fellow lab members, and master the logistical aspects of lab operations. By the time I reach August and begin my Capstone Experience, I will be well established and trained. I’ll be able to put in the hours of doing wet work and put much of my efforts into understanding the data and its implications. Although there is not a cut-and-dried schedule, I imagine August, September, and October will mostly be dedicated to hands-on bench work.
