My interest in scientific research stems from my love of labs and my overall curiosity of how biological systems function. Raised in a scientifically oriented environment in which I listened to multitudes of stories regarding my family’s research, I remember hearing about the varying discoveries my grandmother had made in her lab, and how much joy it brought her, which made me want to share in that eagerness to discover. Thus, I became extremely interested in knowing how research is conducted, and how important discoveries emerge from testable hypotheses. As a result, I deem the crucial skills needed to succeed in research to be: curiosity, perseverance, motivation, and teamwork. These are all skills I believe I have. In addition to this occurrence, I am a very determined and charismatic worker. For instance, during a photosynthesis biology lab, my classmates and I had to calculate how light affects the absorbance rate of spinach’s chlorophyll. Throughout this lab, I had to ensure that each sample was not exposed to more light than necessary, so as to avoid altering the both the data and the rate. Since each sample’s absorbance rate had to be calculated every minute, it was necessary for everyone in the group to remain focused at all times so as to avoid mistakes. By making sure that everyone knew what their task was, and leading the group, I was able to increase our overall efficiency, all the while ensuring that avoidable mistakes would not occur. Moreover, during each group projects I had to complete, for both scientific and non-scientific classes, I was able to motivate my classmates and remain focused on the task at hand. Thus, as I am driven by my curiosity to do research on my own time in order to fully grasp concepts, I believe I would fit well in a research setting. Though I have never done scientific research in a lab before, I am always eager to do more for my team and ask for help when I am uncertain.
