The Kroger Co. is a grocery retailer in the United States started by Bernard Kroger in 1883. With his life savings of $372 and a simple motto: “Be particular. Never sell anything you would not want yourself.” he opened the first Kroger grocery store in Cincinnati, Ohio. Bernard Kroger owned one of the first chain store operations in the United States. In fact, he was a 19th-Century Chain Store Pioneer. By the early 1900s, Bernard Kroger had developed a chain of 40 stores and a factory in Cincinnati which he incorporated as The Kroger Grocery and Baking Company, becoming the first grocery chain to offer an in-house bakery. Kroger is headquartered in Cincinnati Ohio and has stores located mainly throughout the Midwest and the Southern regions of the country. Over a hundred years after Kroger was incorporated, the company now counts approximately 400,000 employees, and the company operates 40 subsidiaries. As one of the leading retail grocery stores, Kroger has experienced a major expansion since the first store opened in 1883. In fact, Kroger Co owes its current success to its ability to manufacture their own products which represent a significant percentage of the products sold in the company’s stores. In addition, Kroger corporate brands represent 26% of the stores’ total dollars’ sales. Besides Kroger’s ability to manage its own manufacturing plants which in turn help boost sales, the company has also been growing at a rapidly large rate due to a couple of successful mergers over the years.
