The business we chose to focus our project on is Publix Supermarkets. On Sept. 6, 1930, founder George Jenkins opened his first store, called Publix Food Store, in Winter Haven Florida. Today Publix has grown to be Florida’s largest employer with 168,500 employees and run 1,080 stores. Total sales in 2013 were 28.9 billion, relatively large for a regional corporation. Their mission statement is “To be the premier food quality retailer in the world,” and they’re doing an excellent job at it.
In Doe v. Koger, a student with intellectual disabilities was expelled based on disciplinary issues. The school denied the student a due-process hearing for students with disabilities. When the family took the school district to court, it was ruled that before changing the placement of a student with disabilities through long term suspension or expulsion, a hearing must be held to determine whether the child’s inappropriate behavior was a result, or manifestation of his/her disability. Doe v. Kroger was a monumental court case in the history of special education because it determined that students with disabilities can in fact be suspended or expelled as a disciplinary measure, but only after a manifestation determination has taken place

In the article "Why gas stations may be the new grocery stores’, written by Maggie Sieger, individuals of different ages and living in different locations discuss their feelings toward convenience stores replacing grocery stores. One customer explains that instead of wasting mileage on his car by going to multiple places, he gets his gas and all the other things he needs in one stop. Sieger explains that millennials are now more likely to stop and buy items at a convenience store than any other age group. As a result, there is a business and cultural shift. Stores are responding to this shift by expanding their food options and focusing more on fresh fruits and vegetables.

Consumers have been enamored with the fan favorite for over 85 years. Publix service strategies are passionately focused on customer value ensuring customers are provided a shopping experience tailored to bestow upon them the highest degree of satisfaction. This includes their digital space, where shoppers browse for coupons, and physical locations where customer service representatives quickly and happily respond to customer inquiries
Publix is an employee-owned supermarket chain that sells a variety of goods including groceries, baked goods and deli meats just to name a few. The store, located on Tiger Boulevard is a 64,000-square foot store that currently has 134 employees. Publix places an emphasis on customer service and satisfaction. The combination of extraordinary customer service and high-quality products, has made Publix the largest and fastest growing, employee-owned supermarket chain in America. I interviewed Mr. Wayne Martin, who is the store manager for the Publix located here in Clemson.

In the review of the corporate level strategy, we can see many different competitive advantages branching from their use of corporate diversification and vertical integration. Going deeper into those strategies the three elements that allow for a competitive advantage for The Kroger Co. include operating into different markets, having a successful customer reward program, and by having many different locations nationwide under many different brand names. Publix is a grocery store that I am familiar with in Huntsville. Publix stands out from its competitors like Kroger, Piggy Wiggly, Wal-Mart, and Whole Food Market for many reasons. For starters, Publix has a unique rewards program. For example, the Publix baby club and Publix Paw are free to join and include monthly savings and expert tips on baby and pet items. Publix also has two for one coupon which in contrast most of their competitors do not have available.

Walking into a grocery store is like entering the gates of a labyrinth--there is no escape. In most stores, they never place essential groceries near the entry ways. Products in the deli, dairy, and produce section are each scattered around the store to intentionally make the shopper make a complete loop around the store before proceeding to checkout. In a store like Ralphs, this is especially true. No matter where a customer enters the building, they are forced to walk through numerous aisles of items that they did not initially intend to purchase; however, they often leave with these items due to the recurring temptations.
