People cannot think in terms of advantage and disadvantage or gain and loss because we cannot tell how an event will play out before it actually does. Even if someone thinks something is obviously a misfortune, they cannot truly know because they do not know what will happen next. In fact, all events that transpire are ever-changing, meaning they are constantly changing. So even when we think an event has transpired, it hasn’t truly transpired because life is one big cause-and-effect chain. Everything we do now will affect us later. For example, someone is enrolled in A&P I during the fall semester. They have a teacher who gives easy tests. Since the teacher gives easy tests, the student knows she can ace every exam without studying. The student considers herself fortunate for being able to get an A in the class without having to do much work. The following semester, she takes A&P II with a different instructor. This instructor isn’t so easy. The teacher is building off of the concepts the students learned in A&P I, except this student didn’t actually study so she doesn’t know them. Suddenly, she no longer considers it good fortune that she had an easy teacher in A&P I. She now considers herself misfortunate for getting stuck with a hard A&P II teacher.
