Learn to Fail [ Feb. 12, 2012], failure is the most significant, but hurtful step towards a successful life. If a person has never honestly dealt with failure, how can they possibly ever improve or move forward? It is important to learn and be able to solve problems in society, whether it is for academic or not.
The book Schooled is written by Gordon Korman. The main character is capricorn Anderson. It takes place at a school by the name of Claverage school (Or as they call it C-Average). It also takes place at Garland Farms Commune where Cap lives. Caps grandma Rain gets hurt and Cap has to go to school.
Schooled by Gordan Korman is about a boy named Capricorn Anderson who learns about that there are friends to back you up, friendship and reveals that you shouldn’t be pushed around because your friends are always there to stand up for you. Capricorn Anderson is not an average 13 year old. He has never had any friends or been to school with others. He was homeschooled all his life with his hippie grandmother, Rain. All he had was Rain, but when Rain breaks her hip, Capricorn has to go live with the Donnellys and go to C Average Middle School.
In her essay Best of Class, Talbot tries to convince her audience that though the valedictorian system is flawed, it should be kept to motivate and reward student for their academic achievement. Talbot”s audience can be thought to be liberal adults of any education. This can be deduced due to both diction and various explanation of high school functions. As an article published in the widespread liberal New Yorker, the article reaches a number of people, mainly adults, though the word choice is simple and can be easily read by any level of education. Also, Talbot goes into detail describing the various academic factors that contribute to a GPA, a concept adults wouldn’t be to familiar with unless they had children.
Holly Hassel and Jessica Lourey are English professors at their respective universities. In the second paragraph of the essay they posed a question that shapes this essay: “How do we teach our students to be accountable for their educational choices and performances? To answer their hypothesis, they took a survey of one thousand and ninety-five students total. The surveyed included questions about the meaning of each letter grade, perceptions of teacher/ student relationships and how many hours should be spent studying per three credit hour class. Ninety-three percent of students rated themselves responsible, thirty-nine percent of students had missed three or more days of class at the tenth week of the semester.
In the realistic short story “ Seventh Grade” by Gary Soto, the main character named Victor, is desperate. Because he tries very hard to get a girlfriend, he finds many ways to be with his crush Teresa, and because he does embarrassing things to try and impress girls. The first reason Victor is desperate is because he tries hard to get a girlfriend. For instance, he promised himself “Teresa is going to be my girl this year”. In addition, Victor took Michael’s advice and used his (ridiculous) “strategy” on how to “get girls” by scowling at them.
2017 is set to make history as a record number of American students graduate from high school this year. The rise in diplomas has also led to a rise in people’s concerns over the fairness and standards students are measured by. As we witness a greater focus is being put on the traditional grading system some believe that the culture surrounding the grading has had a turn for the worst. Professor Rebecca Schuman, a critic of this change, uses rhetorical devices in her essay to make the reader aware of the problems today’s grade culture has on the educational system. Schuman first uses her personal stories as a high school teacher to ridicule the current grade culture.

The Pursuit of Grades Over Happiness There are many accomplishments that we have achieved, yet many to achieve, and the race towards them never seems to stop. Well, this is the case for many students because the race towards achieving high grades never comes to an end. Grades are meaningless in the grand scheme of things, as they do not control the rest of your life, but yet are still overly looked upon and can affect a student’s life drastically. In Kurt Wiesenfeld’s article “Making the Grade”, he address the issue that students want a higher grade than they deserve. He goes on to prove this be by giving examples of previous students that he has had and what can happen when students get the grades that they want and not what they deserve. In Wiesenfeld’s article he states that about ten percent of students that take his class do not care about their grades until final grades are over. “You might groan and moan, but you accepted it as the outcome of your efforts or lack thereof,” Wiesenfeld stated.
Grades are said to drive students to push themselves even more, yet it is not entirely true. Some students cheat, causing their grades to fly high, and that doesn’t reflect wit at all. In a survey of 24,000 students at 70 high schools, Donald McCabe (Rutgers University) found that 64 percent of students admitted to cheating on a test, 58 percent for plagiarism, and 95 percent for some other form of cheating.
