Numerous Confederate soldiers joined the KKK; therefore, they soon dressed as the Ghost of Confederate Soldiers. At first, they would patrol the roads and crash parties. They eventually realized that the freed black people were terrified of them and used this to control their behavior. They started seeing themselves as a law enforcers rather than law breakers. In the South, there was a group called the Ku Klux Klan, or the KKK. They would run rampant killing whoever they pleased, and no one would stop them. The KKK would kill political figures who supported Reconstruction or freedman. In a testimony to the Senate, Abram Colby states, “On the 29th of October 1869, [the Klansmen] broke my door open , took me out of my bed, took me to the woods and whipped me three hours or more and left me for dead” (Colby 513). The KKK targeted African Americans and tortured them to death.
White supremacists were against the liberation of slaves and did everything in their power to destroy the idea of equality. Document two is an excerpt from a newspaper published in 1863 that discusses white supremacist groups in Tennessee and why they existed. The text states, “a mysterious organization known as ‘Ku Klux Klan’… its grand purpose being to establish a nucleus around which “the adherence of the late rebellion might safely rally” (Doc 2). The Ku Klux Klan was a white nationalist group that used violent tactics to scare and attack African Americans.
The KKK was a group of white planters, merchants, and Democratic politicians. In Colfax, Louisiana, in 1873, armed whites assaulted this town with a small cannon. Hundreds of formers slaves were murdered, along with fifty members of a black militia, even after they surrendered. This was their bloodiest attack. The Ku Klux Klan first emerged in Pulaski, Tennessee following the Civil War. As we know today, the mere mention of the Klan triggers fear as the KKK is known for its various tactics of violence that came in the form if lynchings, murders, and mutilations. Following their emergence, the KKK were quickly symbolized and portrayed as the protectors of the South, following the defeat of the Southern states in the Civil War and the beginning of the period of Reconstruction by the federal government (Gurr, 1989, p. 132). During the 1920s, the KKK achieved its greatest political success and growth outside of the South. During this period, the membership of the Klan heavily expanded to the states of Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Oklahoma, Colorado, and Oregon, to which the KKK obtained two to two and one-half million members at its apex.
The KKK was a group of white southerners who did not want the policies establishing political and economic equality for blacks to be successful. The KKK engaged in underground campaigns of intimidation and violence directed at Republican leaders, both white and black. One of the most notorious areas of the Klan was South Carolina. In January 1871, five hundred masked men attacked a Union county jail and lynched eight black prisoners. Acts like these would go “unnoticed” by officials and other influential citizens in the area because of the fear of how the Klan would retaliate and also by the lack of care for what the Klan was doing.
The Ku Klux Klan was founded in 1865 by six veterans of the Confederate Army. Over a period of three hundred years of slavery in America White slave owners built a sophisticated structure to sustain their brutally corrupt and immoral system. They founded “The Klan” to protect the interests of the white popularity. Evolving from the Slave Patrol to the Ku Klux Klan. The first generation was known for its brutal and immoral acts against immigrants and former slaves.
This campaign of terror against the former slaves and other supporting them was able to enforce white supremacy. The members of the Klan were cloaked in robes and hoods to disguise their identity. Their disguise made them able to approach the former slaves without noticing and they threatened, beat, and killed numerous African Americans (“Ku Klux Klan”). They also singled out those who supported the African Americans. They threatened school teachers, ministers, and anyone else who might be in a position to encourage former slaves (“Ku Klux Klan”).

The KKK was able to uphold segregation even in the civil rights movement era, they commanded fear among Black individuals by scaring them with their “night rides”' '. These night rides consisted of driving through Black people's neighbourhoods, Throwing fire crosses in their front yards, along with shooting and brutally beating Black people. Tthe notion (ideology) that white people are superior to people of colour in terms of their ideas, thinking, beliefs, and behaviour (“The Deacons”, 2016). Our institutional and cultural presumptions that give the white group importance, morality, righteousness, and humanity while demeaning persons of colour and communities of colour are constant manifestations of white supremacy (Meszaros, 2023). The KKK was able to scare civil rights protesters and the Black majority from raising their voices against white people in fear of themselves or their families being targeted.
The Ku Klux Klan didn’t just got to peoples’ homes or schools, they also would attack prisoners in community jails. The Klan never attacked during the day so that they wouldn’t get caught by southern officials. So, for safety they would only attack at night. This group was made up of white heterosexual men that didn’t agree with the government’s views. One of the worst attacks that happened was in 1865.
