Reconstruction is a time period that no American is proud of. This was a time of terrorism, racism, and getting our country back on its feet. Reconstruction started after World War ll. Abraham Lincoln was the president during reconstruction until he was assassinated, leaving Andrew Johnson as the leader of our country. Some may say that this time period was really no big deal, and it all worked out in the end. That was if you were a white rich man living in the north. How would you feel as a black man living in the south where everyone hated you for your skin color, because that is how it was like in the time period of 1865-1867. Many rights that passed to give blacks the freedom that they needed. For example, the Thirteenth Amendment passed in 1865. The Thirteenth Amendment said “ Neither Slavery nor involuntary servitude, except within the United States, or any other place subject to their jurisdiction. This amendment was passed to abolish all slavery and give blacks their freedom. However freedom didn’t come easy and when the Thirteenth Amendment was passed black codes were also established to keep blacks from doing some things that whites did. The Ku Klux Klan didn’t just got to peoples’ homes or schools, they also would attack prisoners in community jails. The Klan never attacked during the day so that they wouldn’t get caught by southern officials. So, for safety they would only attack at night. This group was made up of white heterosexual men that didn’t agree with the government’s views. One of the worst attacks that happened was in 1865. It occurred during a night time mass.
