Lady Macbeth Alice Sebold once said, “Murderers are not monsters, they're men. And that's the most frightening thing about them.” One of the most frightening character in literature is Shakespeare's Lady Macbeth. Although she appears to be a loving wife, she manipulates her husband into killing the king. In planning the murder, she asks the spirits to fill her with cruelty so she will have the strength to kill Duncan. Lady Macbeth is evil because her actions show her to be ruthless and cruel. Lady Macbeth is evil because she premeditated a murder and manipulated her husband. Lady Macbeth wants the spirits to take away her emotions completely so she can be cold hearted and murder the king. “Come, you spirits that serve the thoughts of mortals: rid me of the natural tenderness of my sex and fill me from head to toe with direst cruelty!” (I, v, 39-42). She is talking about the wrongdoings she did.“The smell of the blood is still there. All the perfumes of Arabia cannot sweeten this little hand. Oh,oh,oh!” (V,i, 46-48). She did not like that she could not get rid of the smell of the blood. It said the smell of the blood is still there so what she is saying is that the blood smell won't go away so she is feeling guilty about the murder. However, Lady Macbeth does not feel guilty about having the king's blood on her hands.“My hands are the same color as yours-but I’d be ashamed to have a heart as white as yours!” (II, ii, 64-65). The smell of the blood could be a metaphor for saying her conscience was clean, but Macbeth’s will never be clean.
