The villains in Macbeth are the titular characters, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. Macbeth is considered a villain because he murdered the king – under his wife’s consent – and became more and more power hungry as the play evolves. Lady Macbeth is named a villain because she manipulates her husband into doing the things she wants so she can indirectly gain more power. She convinces her husband to kill the king so he can have reign of the kingdom. They are characterized as villains because they have committed an unthinkable act out of pure selfishness and an unquenchable need for power. At first, Macbeth is not an obvious villain.
