One reason why I believe Lady Macbeth should be blamed for Macbeth’s downfall is that she is a manipulative person. While some people may solely accuse Macbeth of committing regicide, it was Lady Macbeth who manipulated Macbeth into doing these acts. Most people should remember that Macbeth tried backing out of Lady Macbeth’s plan, but she still insisted on getting him to proceed with the murder. Lady Macbeth tells Macbeth “When you durst do it, then you were a man;” (1.7.56) when Macbeth told Lady Macbeth that he was backing out. Lady Macbeth tries to emasculate Macbeth just because he doesn’t agree to go through with the murder. Lady Macbeth tries to manipulate Macbeth into committing regicide by playing with Macbeth’s insecurities about being a man. Lady Macbeth also tells Macbeth “Wouldst thou have that Which thou esteem’st the ornament of life, And live a coward in thine own esteem, Letting ‘I dare not’ wait upon ‘I would, ‘” (1.7.45 - 48). Lady Macbeth tries to stop Macbeth’s doubts on the murder by calling him a coward. She tries to feed his ambition by playing with his insecurities and further instilling a thought that you should do whatever you want to, even if it takes doing a really heinous act. Most people would expect Lady Macbeth to be more concerned of Macbeth considering he is her husband, instead she tells Macbeth “Why, worthy thane, You do unbend your noble strength to think so brainsickly of things” (2.2.58 - 60).
