A title is a ranking in society. However having a title does not guarantee power. A person’s character and action determine power. In the beginning of the play Macbeth, the Scottish Army was at war with the Norwegian Army. Macbeth was the one who led the war, and won. After the war, Macbeth and Banquo ran into three creepy sisters. The sisters who were witches told Macbeth that he will be Thane of Cawdor, and also King. Macbeth wrote about how Scotland won the war, and about the witches and what they told him. However she did not know that Macbeth was no longer Thane of Glamis, and now Thane of Cawdor. Immediately after she finished reading the letter, a messenger came in announcing Macbeth’s arrival with Guest’s for a party. Lady Macbeth saw this as an opportunity to gain power. She was willing to do anything to get power. She saw the party as a time to kill the king. Since Lady Macbeth is a female she felt as if she didn’t have enough strength. “The raven himself is hoarse, that croaks the fatal entrance of Duncan … unsex me here; and fill me, from the crown to the toe, top-full of direct cruelty! Make thick my blood” (I, v, 34-41). After Lady Macbeth read the letter, she realized she wanted more power, and she also would do anything to get it. The night after the party, Lady Macbeth went to where the king was sleeping and gave the guards alcohol so they would become intoxicated and pass out. After she did this, she rang a bell, the bell was que for Macbeth to go in and kill King Duncan. The plan was for Macbeth to kill Duncan with the guards’ swords and plant them on the guards so Macbeth wouldn’t be blamed. However after, Macbeth killed King, he went back with the swords still in his hands. Lady Macbeth saw this and planted the swords on the guards herself. The next day when the news was out that King Duncan was dead, Macbeth and his wife acted as if they were clueless of the situation. Macbeth even brought out his despair by going back and killing the guards. Later on, Macbeth was speaking with Banquo. They had a conversation about the witches and their prophesies. Banquo acknowledged all of Macbeth’s prophesies came true. Macbeth started thinking about Banquo’s prophesies, “Your sons will be kings. ” Macbeth thought about losing his power. He didn’t want to lose his power; he devised a plan to kill Banquo and his sons, so that Banquo’s prophesies will not come true.
