The tragedy of Lady Macbeth The hunger for more has led many people into taking a malevolent path. Although the idea of having everything sounds pleasant, it is important to realize that one needs to “be careful about what they wish for”. It might be regrettable in the end. Shakespeare’s tragedy Macbeth clearly portrays how a person can seem sure and fearless about a decision at first, but can learn to deeply regret it in the end. Lady Macbeth gives a good example of how great power can lead the mind down a destructive path. At the beginning of the play, Lady Macbeth was wicked and manipulative, but throughout the course of the play, her actions drastically changed. Macbeth has finally accomplished what he wanted, and was given Duncan’s position as King. Which then made Lady Macbeth a queen. She got what she desired, but did not take well to the memory of the murder. She was afraid, and was torturing herself with it. She showed so while she was sleepwalking in the night, desperate to wash her hands. While the gentlewoman and doctor stand and look at her, to which then she sobs while asleep: “Out, damned spot! out, I say!”(Act V, Scene 1). She is washing her hands because she feels like there is blood on her hands from the King. She did not do the actual murder, but still, her mind is making her suffer for it. She is afraid of the dark, and afraid of all wicked. Once she wanted all that for the power, but now she wants none of it. It is also shown that she does not care about the power that she has now been given. She has become too overcome with her mind that it is all she cares about. Lady Macbeth is not seen after this, but it is clear that she committed suicide when Seyton delivers Macbeth this news: “The queen, my lord, is dead”(Act V, Scene V). Lady Macbeth had completely changed from who she was at the beginning of the play. She was the hunter, now she had become the prey. Lady Macbeth had committed suicide from the fear and torture that came from the desired power she had once yearned
