Lady Macbeth Portrayal Throughout centuries, countless of personalities have risen and has had an effect either positive or negative to the community that revolves around them. Each person has a unique but defined character trait that sets them apart. However, if this was not the case, and everybody operated the same way, the world will be in a linear path summed up of same ambitions, goals, and character traits. In summary, no one would stand out from another. Fortunately, God has gifted each human being a trait/personality that is distinct from everybody else. Unfortunately, not all people use this uniqueness for the better. In Macbeth, written by Shakespeare, one character that affects thinking and minds of others is Lady Macbeth. He write about the sleep walking scene and how her persuasion of Macbeth killing Duncan haunts her. “Somnambulism may be defined as a mental state in which the subject possesses particular memories and does particular acts, but of which there is no memory on return to the normal state of consciousness. The amnesia of somnambulism is of the same nature as all hysterical amnesias; - the subject is incapable of attaching to his normal personality the memories of the somnambulistic attack.” What Couche is trying to explain is that although how driven and willing Lady Macbeth was, her savagery and inhumane acts follow her. She was exhibiting abnormal states because the images of that horrid night when King Duncan was murdered. Lady Macbeth's recollections – the blood on her hand, the clock striking, her husband's reluctance – are brought forth to her disordered mind and each image deepens her anguish. From being driven to her being queen to being haunted by her deeds and insure thoughts. To fortify this thought, I’ll add one of the many quotes that she says when she starts recollecting images. In Act 5 she says, “What, will these hands ne'er be clean? ... Here's the smell of the blood still: All the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand." Lady Macbeth is transferring an unpleasant group of memories or complexes, which have a strong personal and emotional significance, and is slowly starting to lose her sanity. She smells the blood from the dagger that killed king Duncan and can’t rid the smell with any of her finest
