Las Meninas Compare/ContrastThe Painting Las Meninas was originally painted in 1656, by Diego Velázquez. Las Meninas translates in English to Ladies in Waiting. Around 1957, a famous spanish painter, Pablo Picasso, made over 50 renditions of Las Meninas. There are many small and big similarities as well as differences.One of the easiest seen similarities between these two painting are the infantas, or princesses. Another smaller but noticeable similarity is that maid helping the princess get ready or clean up. The maids in both paintings seem to be watching, helps or talking to the princess. Diego Velázquez’s style is more realistic than Picasso’s because Picasso uses an art style called cubism. Another huge difference between these paintings are the main topics. In Pablo Picasso’s painting he enlarged the princess possibly implying that she is the main topic. But in Diego Velázquez’s painting, he has multiple maids and only one princess. One other huge difference is the background. In Pablo’s he just has a plain black and brown background but in Diego Velázquez’s his is a room with paintings and a door. The last but smaller difference is that there is no self portrait.Diego Velázquez could have tried to portray many different things. But I think that Diego Velázquez was trying to portray that the princess is always taking her time and that she has people that care for her and want to help you. I also think that Diego Velázquez created this painting because he was requested. This is only a theory but I think this because he was a royal artists who works for the king.
