My passion towards the study of Law is much different than that of a typical Pre-Law student. I had to fight to find the connection that led me towards considering a legal career. It wasn’t until recently that I started listing “passionate” as a skill set on my resume. I always aim to act ethically and think morally, but when I was exploring the variety of jobs available to me I became unsure of which career I could apply my core values to. Throughout my life I have always been the midpoint of legal conflict. My mother was sixteen years old when she had me and was forced to sign legal guardianship over to my grandmother. Over the past decade this legal dispute has created immense conflict within my family. I was raised in a family that held a naturalistic interpretation of the law and when the legal guardianship papers were signed I was sent to Charlotte to live with my grandparents. This legal agreement made it possible for my grandparents to provide for me in a way that my mother could not. In doing so, I became aware of the different career paths one could take when choosing to practice Law. I was automatically struck with anxiety and accepted that I was not cut out to be a lawyer. I fell under the assumption that all great lawyers are “born as such”. It wasn’t until I completed an International Studies course that I realized our world runs on the interactions between individuals and that the study of law comes into focus with many aspects of those interactions.
