“Attitude reflects leadership, captain” - Julius Campbell. In the film Remember the Titans, T.C. Williams High School is the first integrated high school in its area. The football team had to come together and rise up to overcome their differences in skin color in order to play as one, successful team. The group of boys accomplished great things due to the leadership of not only their coaches, but the leadership of the athletes themselves. In Lord of the Flies written by William Golding, a group of young boys become stranded on an island, and need to learn how to survive on their own until they are rescued. “By the time Ralph finished blowing the conch the platform was crowded…”We’ll have rules!” he cried excitedly. “Lots of rules! Then when anyone breaks’ em-” (Golding 33). They decide-all on their own-that they need to call meetings and establish order early on. It shows that although the boys are young, they are taking initiative and want to be successful in their survival. Similarly, in Remember the Titans, the boys have finally come together as one, only to find out the rest of the world doesn’t want them to be. The captains show initiative when they call a team meeting without their coaches knowledge. When the meeting is over, the boys have an even tighter bond than when they had gathered in the gym that night. Ralph and Jack do not have the same values. This is reflecting onto the productivity of the boys and flow of the island. “We want meat.” “Well, we haven’t got any yet. And we want shelters. Besides, the rest of your hunters came back hours ago. They’ve been swimming” (Golding 51). Ralph and Jack’s disagreements leave the boys confused, as well as unproductive. It leaves questions in everyone’s minds such as What is our top priority? And What is the best way to survive on this island? Ralph and Jack are both firm in their ways and will not easily compromise to one another, making the savage’s time on the island miserable. The exact opposite of this situation is seen in the movie during the Titans’ football camp. A near perfect example of what a leader should be is coach Herman Boone. He has goals, he knows what needs to be done to achieve those goals, and he gets it done. At the beginning of the camp, the team was sloppy, no one got along, and nothing was clicking. By the end of the two weeks away from external influences, the boys were like family, their drills were nearly flawless, and no one would doubt that they’d played together before.
