In Oedipus Rex, the author Sophocles characterizes Oedipus’ leadership qualities by claiming that Oedipus is a powerful king and reverent to people of Thebes. For example, in the beginning of the play, Oedipus states, “tell me and never doubt that I will help you in every way I can.” This quote emphasizes Oedipus as a powerful leader because he is willing to do anything to protect his people. For example, in the past Oedipus has saved Thebes from Sphinx. Moreover, Oedipus states, “send me from Thebes.” Here, the quote shows that Oedipus is concerned about the people of Thebes. For instance in the play, when Oedipus finds out the truth that he is the one who killed king Laius, as a concerned leader Oedipus exiles himself from Thebes to save
