Leadership Philosophy By: TMCS(SS) John VanDenburg Jr. The definition of leadership is a person that tells you how it is and leads you as a person but is also humble enough to take feedback from you to better themselves and the team. Prior influence from a great Senior Enlisted leader was treating the command as a family. This opened my eyes with that style of thinking with regards of leading my Sailors. One example is when I was part of a disciplinary review board (DRB) for the first time at the command and we talked to them and seeing how we failed as the leaders and how we can fix the Sailor. For Family you need to treat all the Sailors as if they are part of your family, when you do this, you gain there trust along with the willing to talk to you if there is something wrong at work or in their personal life. For Recognition it is your job to recognize them for their good work, this will enable them to do better because they know if they do a good job, they will get recognize for it. For Loyalty this can go both ways, if you treat them with respect and dignity, they will become loyal to you and the command. For Communication you need to enable them the ability to communicate up and down the chain of command, and you need to release how to communicate with them on what you can tell them and what you can not tell them. For Flexibility they need to understand if the command needs them someplace else that we as a division needs to be flexible and allow them to go where the command needs them and see the bigger picture. First is takes initiative in anticipating and responding to change, I need to take a step back and see the bigger picture and then take on the change and follow it. Second is Tell stories of encouragement about the good work of others, I do this with my division I need to get out of my division and start doing it around the boat with other divisions this will show all the Sailors that I care about everyone and not just my division. The Third is Actively listens to diverse points of view, this has been a weak spot for me for many years, I have been working on this and have been getting better, but there is still room to grow this will make me a better leader once I get all up around on it. The Forth is Identifies measurable milestones that keeps projects moving forward, I need to work on this for the command aspect of this to keep the Sailors engage with the bigger picture and keep the command moving forward to complete the mission and long-term schedule. The Fifth is Appeals to others to share dream of the future. I need to get better at selling the future of the navy to the younger Sailors to help retaining them in the navy, along with making better and smarter Sailors for the
