The manager has to efficiently coordinate and supervise the day to day performance of the operating rooms. The daily operations of a hospital surgical unit is a tasking feat involving many moving parts. The manager must coordinate with every provider involved in the care of each patient. Management of each patient involves arranging care prior to patient’s arrival to the hospital in preparation for surgery. If already hospitalized, then arrangement of care is made with the unit care providers. Planning between unit managers of pre and post-surgical unit is essential in order to maintain a smooth transition of patient care. Materials management is responsible for purchasing and managing supplies and equipment. Most supplies and equipment routinely used are normally kept stocked. Prior planning for each case is essential to ensure all necessities are available. Special or new procedures might require loaner equipment and special supplies and a specialized trained product or equipment representative. Therefore, prior arrangements are crucial for the delivery of safe and timely procedures. Central sterile processing is responsible for the proper sterilization of instruments. Surgical procedures scheduled are forwarded to the central processing unit in order to organize the sterilization of the needed instruments. In order to prevent unnecessary delays in patient care previous preparation is important because safe sterilization is a lengthy process. Physicians, surgeons and anesthesiologist, are the chief participants in planning for procedures. Organizing with the physicians prior to each procedures is of most importance and key to providing safe patient care.
