Abstract
Learning policy is ultimately defined by the opportunities the nurse has to interact with policies. It can ultimately be divided into the functions of learning how policy currently influences care, and then learning how the nurse may influence policy, for the sake of improving care, or the nursing process in general. This plan briefly discusses the role of opportunities in the pursuit of learning policy, specifically looking at the significance of volunteer and unpaid roles. Thus, Mason et al.’s (2016) focus on educational opportunities is an excellent framework. While continuing education is an obvious means, the power of internships, fellowships, and especially volunteer service should not be underestimated. Volunteer work is particularly useful for developing specific leadership skills and unique experiences, such as grant writing, or interaction with and perhaps even a seat on a board that influences a nursing organization (Roux & Halstead 2017, 116-117). But it is first most important to be open to the opportunities that can contribute to wider understanding of the consequences of health policy, and how best to influence them.
