I have a personal understanding of Alexie’s essay. Being dyslexic, I struggled with stereotypes growing up. Kids called me stupid, even though I was confident that I wasn't. In my heart I knew I was smart, but I just learned differently. It took me longer.
David Bois, a dyslexic lawyer and litigator, has struggled with reading all his life, but he had a "childhood fascination with the law and decided that he would go to law school," which requires a lot of reading, but because of his dyslexia, he could not read like everyone else (2). His peers would be reliant on reading and studying to succeed in school, and to succeed in a law career. Thankfully, when he was in school his listening is what kept him ahead of the game because, “while everyone else furiously made notes or doodled or lapsed into daydreams,” he would focus in on everything that was said and written, and paste it all into his memory (2). He was mentally advanced compared to his fellow students, because everything he needed to study or review has already been drilled into his mind.

Jaziah Shipp “Disabilities” I have experienced being under many labels. With all of these labels the excruciating painful times were harder when I was just finding out that I was adopted wondering “do my birth parents even love me”, “who is my real parent”, and “why didn’t she want me”. When I was in elementary school I was labeled with a speech disability. School became a big issue in my life. I was so hurt when I had to present in front of the class.
For instance, the most common disabilities within public schools are learning disabilities, of this category, the most common disability is some type of reading deficiencies or Dyslexia (University of Cincinnati, 2016). While the problem develops early, it can take years before students are able to reach the same level as their peers. A plethora of different approaches to help students with an issue exist, ranging from teaching strategies, reading strategies, and even some technologies. Yet no matter how effective a strategy or assistive technology has been proven to be, it still comes down to the individual needs of the students and their own unique abilities. Just like students with ELL needs, it is important to understand many different types of disabilities, as many solutions can appear to be the same.
Being taught the proper way to speak about disabilities really helps, I am now trying to speak in “ Person first” so as not to discriminate or place a stigma upon a person’s shoulders. When I eventually become a teacher all the new information I learned about diversity and disabilities in SED 125 such as knowing that not all children learn the same way or that some children may have a bigger struggle than others, and how to build healthy positive relationships with my future student. The Dyspraxia Foundation describes dyspraxia as ‘an impairment or immaturity of the organisation of movement’. There may also be problems to do with language, perception and thought. Children with dyspraxia often have poorly developed fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Encouraging play using large constructional toys such as Mega Bloks, can help develop fine motor skills (especially pincer grasp) and strengthen the hand muscles when they fix and take the blocks apart and improve hand-eye coordination. Dyslexia is a specific learning difficulty which makes it hard for some people to learn to read, write and spell correctly.
I was diagnosed with dyslexia during my 10th grade as I was slow in learning and writing. I was provided with accommodations for my 10th and 12th grade Board examination by the Central Board of Secondary Education. However, I did not use accommodations during my undergraduate study in MBBS and I had progressively improved in my scores and writing speed with the help of peers and teaching faculty and my own perseverance. With how far I have progressed scholastically, I strongly believe I can independently perform tasks without any aid.
Though I was relieved to know that I was not doomed to a life of unintelligence, this only confirmed that I would have to work harder than everyone else in academics. Instead of crippling me, this empowered me. I used dyslexia as a motivator to work harder in every area of my life. Due to this work ethic, peers and administrators select me for leadership roles.
Despite being the most prevalent learning disability, occurring in 1 out of 5 people, dyslexia occurs on a spectrum. Not everyone is going to experience all the same symptoms. Having dyslexia does not have to prevent you from succeeding in life, be it academically or otherwise. In fact, a lot of prominent figures are reported to have dyslexia.
Many children at school are capable of hiding their learning difficulties by steering clear from reading aloud or writing very little (Reid 2013, p13).Not to mention, the Report of the Task force on Dyslexia (2001) states learning difficulties from dyslexia occurs across the lifespan of a person and can vary from mild to severe at different ages (Report of the Task Force on Dyslexia, 2001). It is extremely vital for teachers to be fully aware and trained in the area of dyslexia. Writing has always been an issue but yet interesting subject of mine. As hard as I try and write essays, and papers I just can’t get the hang of writing. But after taking this class, I did learn different writing technique and improved my writing proficiency, material body of formatting, and how to uncovering and properly use sources. Through class exams, essays, and a research paper, I was able to learn new writing skills. Although I have learned a variety of things, my writing still needs improvement.
My reading was very poor and my writing and spelling was even worse. No matter how hard I tried, I could still not spell or read well. At the age of 10, my mum decided to take me to get tested for dyslexia as my reading, writing and spelling for my age was still extremely poor. After the vigorous testing, it was discovered that I suffered from severe dyslexia. I was encouraged to read and write more.
