Lesson plan Overview:

The following lesson plan is intended for high school students within eleventh grade American History classes. The content of the lesson plan follows the reading, interpretation, significant, and discussion of Gettysburg address. For the content within the lesson plan, if compared to a unit plan, this lesson would come near the later portion of the first half of the semester for American History students. Originally this lesson plan was presented and created by Tyler Cannon as a micro-teach lesson in a previous class, as such the lesson plan was adapted to meet the needs of ELL students with various levels of English needs. For instance, the most common disabilities within public schools are learning disabilities, of this category, the most common disability is some type of reading deficiencies or Dyslexia (University of Cincinnati, 2016). While the problem develops early, it can take years before students are able to reach the same level as their peers. A plethora of different approaches to help students with an issue exist, ranging from teaching strategies, reading strategies, and even some technologies. Yet no matter how effective a strategy or assistive technology has been proven to be, it still comes down to the individual needs of the students and their own unique abilities. Just like students with ELL needs, it is important to understand many different types of disabilities, as many solutions can appear to be the same. Only though the knowledge of both the disability and the strategies or technologies available can a real solution be put forth and implemented for a student in need. Below are four types of disabilities, and how they can be helped within a classroom and within a lesson plan. In the simplest definitions, learning disabilities refer to a neurological disorder, or rather the way in which a person’s brain is wired when it comes to learning (LD online). The “disabilities” aspect of it comes from how a learner within this category is at a disadvantage. The term itself is broad, though one key aspect is the learning process, a student with LD may have trouble reading or understand numbers in math. A student with LD is not typically going to suffer from an IQ problem, but rather it may take some extra time to understand things as their peers do which may be a challenge. Luckily, students within the LD category have the benefit of being one of the more researched and understood disabilities, with ADHD, Dyslexia, and Dysgraphia being among the most prevalent diagnosis. Etiology wise, there is no direct cause for LD, there has been recent studies to suggest it may be hereditary as well as issues during fetal development stages; other times like with ADHD it seems to develop later in life or around early school ages (NCLD, 2013). Again though, students with LD have the benefit of being one of the more researched disabilities, additionally, a variety of easy solutions and technologies exist to help with the problems students face every day.
