Including interest rates, wage, unemployment, exchange rates and inflations If interest rates where high, you wouldn’t buy something because everything is more expensive. Also, if a fast food joint was told to pick a 16-year-old or an 18-year-old they'd pick the 16-year-old because it’s cheaper to employ them as their wages are lower. You start at a base wage which for 16 year olds is $7.98 per hour however the 18 year olds base wage or minimum wage is $11.52 per hour so most business would go for the 16-year-old.
