Leo Tolstoy was a Russian author who wrote many acclaimed novels and short stories, and he ranks among the world's top writers. He was born in Tula Province, Russia, in September 9, 1828, and and died on November 20, 1910 in Astapovo, Russia. His first great novel, War and Peace, was written in the 1850s. In 1873, he started to work on his second best known novel, Anna Karenina. He continued to major in writing fiction throughout the 1880s and 1890s. One of his most successful works later in his live was The Death of Ivan Ilyich. He was educated at the University of Kazan. Because Tolstoy experienced lots of loss at an early age, he could later use his childhood memories to write many great works. He was mainly educated at home, under both French and German tutors. He failed when he went to the University of Kazan, so he tried to become a farmer. However, he soon proved to be a failure at that. The good thing is that he was very successful in keeping a journal, which is the beginning of a lifelong habit that would inspire much of his works of fiction. Also, at one point, his brother convinced him to be a junker in the army, and there, he worked on an autobiographical story called Childhood. It was one of his first works. He suffered a few spiritual crisis' and grew depressed at one point in his life. Throughout his life, he had 13 children, but only 10 survived past infancy. He married a doctor's daughter named Sofya Andreyevna Bers the year he produced the first of a 12 issue installment of the journal Yasnaya Polyana.
