Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) was an Italian polymath; he was one of the greatest artists and thinkers of all time. Da Vinci's artistic talent was evident from an early age, and he quickly became one of the most sought-after painters in Renaissance Italy. He is best known for his art pieces Mona Lisa and The Last Supper. He is very skilled in showing composition, lighting, and perspective. In addition to his artistic achievements, da Vinci was also a great inventor, scientist, and philosopher. With his art he shows the world how if you open your mind to something you can truly do anything. Da Vinci grew up in the Tuscan town of Italy. He was born in 1452 and passed away in 1519. Leonardo was a highly intelligent man if you investigate him, he did so many important things for the world and some wonder what inspired a man like this to be so great. Here are just a few things that inspired him: Art, Science, Nature, Literature, Music, Architecture and even God. There are few documented records of his formal education, it is believed that he received some education in basic reading, writing, and arithmetic, as was common for the sons of wealthy families during the time. He used brushes made of animal hair to apply paint to canvas. He used oil paints, and he would create his own paints by mixing pigments with oils. He used chalk a lot when he studied the human body. He used black or red chalk and sometimes used a mixture of both. In his early stage of drawing, he would use what is called metal point. This is a technique using a metal stylus to create a fine thin line. He created a technique called Sfumato. This is the combination of blending colors together to create a smokey effect. He was able to achieve this by applying layers of thin coats to his paintings. His first piece of art or presumed to be first piece of art that has been found is The Baptism of Christ. The Baptism of Christ is a painting created by Leonardo da Vinci around 1475-1478. The painting depicts the moment when John the Baptist baptizes Jesus in the River Jordan. Da Vinci and Andrea del Verrocchio both created this piece. Verrocchio created the background and the angel in this painting. While Da Vinci created the rest of the painting. The painting also highlights da Vinci's attention to detail because you can see the folds in the clothing and the facial expressions of Christ's face and the angel.
