“A bird the size of a chicken, with scarlet feathers and long legs, was perched precariously, Its wings hung down loosely, and as we watched, a feather dropped away and floated slowly down through the green leaves.” In the short story “The Scarlet Ibis” a bird that was out of it's environment fell from a tree and died. The bird is a symbol for Doodle and the bird represents him. When the bird dies it foreshadows Doodle's death. Hurst uses figurative language and symbolism to create a gloomy tone in his short story by using symbolism and figurative language.
To the Brothers of the Phi Chi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated First I would like to say thank you for taking the time to read this letter. My purpose in writing this letter is to express my desired interest in joining the Phi Chi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated. Growing up being bullied and constantly picked on with no one to protect me in my time of need and having no one to reciprocate that same sense of protection and love left me left a big void in my life.

Since I was ten years old, I have been a member of the Young Marines, a program dedicated to the enrichment of youth. Aside from my family and school, this organization has had an incredible impact on my life, not only providing me with many unique and amazing experiences, but by shaping the foundation of my character by instilling in me the three core principles of the Young Marines: Discipline, Leadership, and Teamwork and also by emphasizing the importance of community service. I have had many amazing and unique experiences as a Young Marine which included the challenges of promotion to become the senior ranking officer, learning many new skills such as CPR, teaching Drug Demand Reduction, leading and mentoring the members of the Unit, going on encampments and traveling. In my sophomore year, my Unit Commander, a Korean War veteran, selected me to travel with him to Seoul. Every few years he chooses a Young Marine to take to South Korea based on merit.
The military is a way for individuals to help our country maintain its rights that we fought for. The person I decided to interview to write this essay was veteran, James Harris. When interviewing an individual of such, who was in the military, I was able to learn more about our country’s history. I became more aware that through the things that men similar to the man I interviewed did in the military, that they have helped improve opportunities in my community. They have allowed us continued freedom, protection of our rights that we fought for, and the advantages we receive for being a military community (Ft. Campbell).
It helped me to be more mature and responsible. I think it’s a great thing for a young man to be by himself and discover the adult world. It help me to deal with the real world without the help of my parents. This event was a big one for me because I’ve work very hard during several years to get drafted and it’s nice to see that it was woth it. It make me realize
I started attending Fork Union Military Academy in the sixth grade and have stayed throughout my entire high school career. To me, this in itself is a large accomplishment and is something I am very proud of. Every cadet goes through many ups and downs, I know in my seven years I have seen more than my fair share of trouble, but like my father always said, it 's not how you fall, but how you pick yourself back up. I made sure to do everything I could to show those around me, and to prove to myself, that I could pick myself up and accomplish anything. I faced and continue to face many different challenges in my daily life, those that every teenager faces, and also those that have been presented to me because of the kind of environment I placed myself in.
Having a parent in the military has allowed me to thrive in a loving and caring environment where the people that you meet and bond with end up becoming somewhat like a family. In which even after you separate from them you can continue to be in contact and still keep that bond with them. Even through the highs and lows of life they continue to be with you even from the long distances the military puts people through. Which in my opinion has made my life a lot less stressful than it would have been if I had not been a part of a military family. It has offered me opportunities I would have never had if I was not a part of this family, and by joining the military allows me to continue this trend and maybe make someone's life better by creating a support network like the one I’ve grown up with in the near
Whether you know a veteran or not, they have impacted America in many positive ways. I know that I should stop and think about this more than I do, but I feel that Americans take their freedom for granted in most cases. I often stop and think about all of the things that are possible because of my freedom. My freedom allows me to wed a husband of my choice and someday have a family. I am able to go to college to pursue the career of my choice and interest.
My dad works for the Air Force, making me a military brat. I have been in places such as Washington, D.C. and Oklahoma City because of his job. Every time I had to leave behind friends, family, and everything I knew to be home. Every move I have gone through has taken me cross-country to places that I thought I wouldn’t enjoy.
Veterans have changed my life in so many ways. They are people who risk their lives for our country because they care for one another. They are courageous, admirable, and self-sacrificing heroes. For example, they dedicate their lives serving for the people and the country. This story I am going to tell is a real life situation of a soldier.
The most important of the vast privileges today’s generation of America has in my opinion are freedom and choice. Of course none of these would’ve been possible without blood, sweat, and tears from our soldiers. America has more than enough gifts to offer for everyone ranging from rich to poor and good to bad. Schools are great and have many advantages that other countries lack. Our veterans have given us everything we need and more so the vast majority of us can be successful.
I wrote a short letter thanking the firefighters and police for helping and saving all those people from the burning building. It went thus: “Thank you Mr. firefighter for keeping me and my family safe. Thank you for saving all those people from the burning building. Thank you for being there when we need you. You are my Hero”.
As I am getting ready to begin my college years, my experience in America is getting richer every day. I have realized how much opportunities I have being an American citizen and living in this part of the world compared to the life i lived in Togo and I intend to make the most of it. I’m working toward my goals and one of them is to join the military. I always have the desire of serving people and I believe serving in the Military is one way to show my gratitude to my new country and its
