Lexington Market, with the current site in need of significant improvements, sets plan for new a new market beside the existing location.
The new plan will bring not only a new structure but also a new procedure on the type of vendors that will be presented leases for stalls in the market.
Founded in 1782 at the site where it stands today, Lexington Market is the oldest public market in America. The Market has been a destination site in Baltimore for residents and visitors since its inception.
In its early days, Lexington Market operated as a farmer’s market. Many farmers would spend all night traveling to make it to Lexington Market. When the opening bell was struck at 2 a.m. farmers sold their hams, butter, eggs, turkeys, and vegetables. At that time, the bazaar was nothing but marsh and grass.
In 1803, a large shed was built to give some shelter and structure to the growing marketplace.

Additionally, the change supports the public authoritative to change Baltimore’s food system to address issues concerning health and diet-related diseases.
Bryant said if he could make one change to the new Lexington Market he would want to see additional fresh produce vendors and more food from different countries. “I do not currently shop at one stand over another because they all offer the same varieties.”
