During the summer I read and enjoyed the book Life as We Knew by Susan Beth Pfeffer. It was hard to decide who changed the most in the book because the conflict (the asteroid hitting the moon) affected everyone in the story. In my opinion, I think during the book Miranda's mom (Laura) changed the most. My reason for thinking this is because a lot of Miranda's diary talks about her mom. The author did a great job showing how Laura was acting and how she took care of Miranda and her siblings as a single mom. The author used details about Laura’s life before the conflict, during the conflict, and the resolution, even though Miranda’s is writing about her life personally. This is why I think Laura changed the most. In the beginning of the book, …show more content…
Laura acted like nothing bad would happen. This is very easy to tell because she was very calm and the day when the asteroid hit the moon she invited someone over and baked cookies. (Page 17) And when the asteroid did hit the moon everyone cheered and was in shock but no one was scared. Later in the story on page 19 and 20 Miranda's diary said that Laura was the calmest person ever and didn't panic. Jonny also asked her if the world is going to end but she replied and said, “No it isn't and yes, you do have to go to school tomorrow.” This made me wonder if she was worried. Miranda also asked her that should she try Fox News. Then she wrote “Mom shuddered. We're not that desperate,” she said. This made me think that Laura was trying not to make Jonny and Miranda scared. During the book, Laura had to reassure herself and her kids that everything would be alright. One example is on page 21 when Miranda asked if Matt was okay Laura said “He's fine there's no reason to think he isn't fine. The moon is right where it belongs. Matt will call us when he has the chance.” This shows me that Laura is acting like everything was alright when she knew nothing was. I knew Laura thought nothing was all right and her family might die, when she came into the school in the middle of her class, Miranda described her as “soaking wet and looked wild and determined.” Page 32 She told Miranda to go to the car and handed her 10 50 dollar
