As I was admiring all the art works displayed in the Telfair Academy of Art and Science, one of them caught my attention, Relics of the Brave by Arthur Hacker painted 1882-1883. This is an oil painting on canvas. Its dimensions are 59 ¼” x 83”. The work depicts a sorrowful young woman sitting down on a small round table, with her right hand on the side of her head, and a letter on the other hand. On the table is one medal.
Regan’s use of ethos, logos, pathos was to make an emotional connection to the families of the Challenger Seven, and to the citizens of the United States. President Regan establishes his credibility and trustworthiness by his credibility as the President of the United States and saying that the Seven were seen as heroes. Regan says, “but they, The Challenger Seven, were aware of the dangers, but overcame them and did their jobs” (Regan 2). Regan wanted the people of the US to know how brave these The Challenger Seven really were. Regan than follows with this quote, “we mourn seven heroes: Michael Smith, Dick Scobee, Judith Resnik, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onizuka, Gregory Jarvis, and Christa McAuliffe” (Regan 2).
I agree with the message of this clip, which is to be cautious when looking for love and be certain that a deep and meaningful connection is present prior to engaging in intercourse with another. I think this is important because we live in a world that is over sexualized and as a result teaches our youth the wrong messages and leaves women feeling that they must seduce a man in order to entice and keep a man. In my opinion, Pastor Paul quoted two of the most profound statements which was King Solomon 's quote "Daughters of Jerusalem, I charge you: Do not arouse or awaken love until it so desires" this was a crucial message because it was directed at women who throughout history have had a tendency to seek love and in many cases try to force love when it is non-existent. Too many women today confuse intercourse with love and they end up with their hearts broken because they believed that a physical relationship would heighten their emotional
The novel, In Cold Blood, is by the professional writer responsible for writing Other Voices, Other Rooms, as well as the novella, Breakfast at Tiffany’s; his name is Truman Capote. Truman Capote came from a troubled beginning, between his mother and father separating to his mother’s drinking problem, Capote had a troubled childhood. But he always had a knack for writing. He published his first novel, Other Voices, Other Rooms, in 1948, and it was a hit. He wrote a few more novels between the time of the publishing of his first novel to the publishing of the hit that is called In Cold Blood.
Speeches are used to commemorate points of history, and inform the general public of the product of their history but what makes a speech so impacting on it’s audience? Rhetorical devices give speeches and works of literature a way that can convey feelings or ideas to a viewer. When addressing during times of war or chaos, people such as Ronald Reagan, Abraham Lincoln, and Winston Churchill used these terms to better connect with their audience. Without these tools of the english language, dialogue and literature would be all the more dull and unappealing. However, with these useful instruments, writers and speakers can better communicate through some of the many rhetorical devices.
Everyone wants the truth and with Leonard Pitts Jr. you get it. Pitts writes for the Miami Herald daily newspaper in southern Florida. His style is very unique in all of his writings, and different from other authors. Pitts mostly focuses on the outbreak of the daily news. For instance, Don’t Lower The Bar on Education Standards is strictly states lowering the bar will not fix anything it will only decrease the standards.
In 1832, Black Hawk's Surrender Speech was driven by determination to fight for the Indians, until he death. The use of rhetorical devices, such as imagery and his mood allows his speech to develop a visual of the way Black Hawk defends his people with no fear. Black Hawk's speech use of imagery supports his claim, due to allowing the reader to visualize the battles he had to confront. The speech mentions, "... His plans are stopped.
In the speech, Black Hawk shifts from first person to third person “We set up the war-whoop, and dug up the tomahawk; our knives were ready, and the heart of Black Hawk swelled high in his bosom, when he led his warriors to battle.” Black Hawk say he led in the noble fight as a team. Black Hawk switches between first and third person to tell the Indians that he has done everything to save his people, but now that he’s a prisoner, it’s time for them to take . In the third person, Black Hawk states “ He is satisfied. He will go to the world of spirits contented.
Petalesharo’s writing reflected the treatment of Native Americans during the 1800s. Being a Native American himself, Petalesharo was able to give perspective on a point in history typically viewed from a white man’s opinion. The excerpt “Petalesharo” explains how the Native American was able “to prevent young women captured by other tribes from being sacrificed”, making Petalesharo well liked by the Americans (588). Petalesharo gave the “Speech of the Pawnee Chief” infront of Americans to convey the differences between Native Americans and Americans through emotion, logic, and credibility, which showed how the two groups will never be the same, but still can coexist in the world together.
I would say I really liked piecing the sonnet together more than anything else. At first I held a negative feeling about having to write a sonnet because I thought it was so dumb and dreaded having to deal with, not sure why I felt this way. Now looking at it I’ve discovered that it is probably one of my best piece of writing out of this whole unit or class in general. I proved myself wrong and somewhat enjoyed finding rhyming words and coming up with sentence and syllables to go along. Haikus are definitely the easiest thing to write while also holding a lot of meaning in them.
Have you ever wonder how does a crime scene investigator, known as a CSI, discover blood spatter on different fabrics, which is not visible to the human eye? The key is bluestar. According to the article “Influence of Bluestar Reagent on Blood Spatter Stain of Different Fabrics” by Arnon Grafit, bluestar is a “luminol-based reagent that is applied by spraying on surface.” Not only that, but “it helps obtain DNA and to analyze spatters patterns. By analyzing the article the reader is able to understand how bluestar works through the rhetorical techniques used.
In the essay, “The Death of the Moth”, Virginia Woolf uses metaphor to convey that the relationship between life and death is one that is strange and fragile. Woolf tells the story of the life and death of a moth, one that is petite and insignificant. The moth is full of life, and lives life as if merry days and warm summers are the only things the moth knows. However, as the moth enters it’s last moments, it realizes that death is stronger than any other force. As the moth knew life seconds before, it has now deteriorated into death.
Peter S. Goodman builds an argument to persuade his audience that news organizations should increase the amount of professional foreign news coverage by giving solutions to the problem he claims that news stations currently has. Goodman states that news agencies do not report nor have reporting about foreign news. Goodman than uses problem and solution to explain his points and to solve his points. He also uses the device appeal to logos to explain his points. And lastly, Goodman compares studies to support his views on this crisis.
