Playing a sport of any kind can help the development of your character positively. The involvement of sports can make a person grow to be more responsible, help form friendships and relationships, and learn self-discipline. Whatever sport a person is involved in can be a learning opportunity and can help grow your character. The qualities that you develop on a court or field present themselves in reality with time. One characteristic that can be earned from playing sports is responsibility. Being involved in sports is a time-consuming activity. According to SKYD Magazine, “High school and college athletes typically reported practicing 10-12 hours” (Pashley, 2017). Between sports, homework, and possibly a job, a student athlete must be responsible enough to manage his or her time wisely. In Like Me stated that “Research has shown that when a person has more responsibilities, s/he is forced to take control of how his/her time is used and that person winds up accomplishing more and maintaining a high performance level in both academics and athletics” (Keelan, 2017). Being able to talk and bond with other people is an important aspect in life. If someone can form a bond with a teammate, in the future that could help with getting jobs and working well with others. According a lead researcher at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Janice Causgrove Dunn believes "Kids who had lower (athletic) confidence said they were more lonely at school” (Toppo, 2017). Without the involvement of sports, students have a tendency to not have as strong of relationships due to the lack of confidence with talking to others.
