In the haunting short story entitled “Norma” written by author Sonia Sanchez, Sonia draws the story to a powerful end by vowing “never to agree again”. At a cursory glance, it appears that she is vowing never to meet Norma again. However, a deeper examination reveals that she makes this promise in order to affirm that she will never again agree to the rigged system that transformed an intelligent and promising young woman into a drug-addled mother of four. As the opening lines of the story, Sanchez describes her own personality as a teenager as “... very shy.

A young girl, who killed her mother and wants to know more about her, changes the 14 year old’s life for a long period of time. In the novel, Lily has lived with some heavy burdens on her shoulders. She has to overcome these things and tell the truth even if she doesn’t want to. In Sue Monk Kidd’s novel, “The Secret Life of Bees,” Lily has a coming of age moment when she tells August the truth about everything. The story is about a boy, telling the story from his point of view at age fourteen. He was asked by his friend to go on a blind date with some girl named Junie Jo, he was ready for this girl to be ugly and annoying but she ended up being gorgeous. He starts trying to talk to her, which in turn makes Junie feel uncomfortable about the main character’s presence. Once the main character takes the hint that Junie is not interested in the least, he realizes that he was the blind date set up for Junie. This fact caused the main character to doubt who he was, and make assumptions that were not necessarily true about his friend and other people's opinions of him.
As much as you can wish for someone to change, sometimes it is just easier to accept others for who they are and understand that won’t ever change. In Abuela Invents The Zero, the main character, Constancia, has a hard time understanding this and frequently mentally criticises her grandmother for just being the way she is. “I have to help her the climb the steps, and she stops to take a deep breath after each one, then I lead her down the aisle so that everybody can see me with my bizarre grandmother. If I were a good Catholic, I’m sure I’d get some purgatory time taken off for my sacrifice. She is walking as slow as Captain Cousteau exploring the bottom of the sea, looking around, taking her sweet time.”
‘’The Stolen Party” written by Liliana Heker is a short story about a nine year old girl named Rosaura. Rosaura is invited to a birthday party with rich people and she is treated more like a servant than a guest at the party. For example, Senora Ines reached into her pink purse and took out two dollar bills and give it to Rosaura, instead of giving her a goody bag as she did to the other children at Luciana’s birthday party. “Thank you for all your help, my pet” Senora Ines said to Rosaura. Senora Ines action showed that Rosaura was being treated more like a help than a guest at her daughter’s party. Senora Ines was Rosaura mom’s boss.
In the story “13 and a half “by rachel vail the main character is invited to go to ashley house. The Main character at that time doesn’t know ashley as much. There only connection was sitting next to each other in math class. Unlikely as it is the main character still said yes to her invitation. Lola takes advantage of her deteriorating mother whose illness represents the declining hold of the norms over Lola. Since her mom “will have trouble lifting her arms over her head for the rest of her life,” Lola is no longer afraid of the “hitting” and grabbing “by the throat” (415,419). As a child of a “Old World Dominican Mother” Lola must be surrounded by traditional values and beliefs that she does not want to claim, so “as soon as she became sick” Lola says, “I saw my chance and I’m not going to pretend or apologize; I saw my chance and I eventually took it” (416). When taking the opportunity to distinguish herself from the typical “Dominican daughter” or ‘Dominican slave,” she takes a cultural norm like long hair and decides to impulsively change it (416). Lola enjoyed the “feeling in [her] blood, the rattle” that she got when she told Karen to “cut my hair” (418).
While reading the story, you can tell in the narrators’ tone that she feels rejected and excluded. She is not happy and I’m sure, just like her family, she wonders “why her?” She is rejected and never accepted for who she really is. She is different. She’s not like anyone else
As a young child, my dream was to become a man of incredible wealth; a man who could not only provide for his family but a man boldly devoted to his job, a man so happy with no boundaries. Wasn’t this the American Dream? Today, I have the same dream as I did 30 years ago. I am where I want to be, yet I could never have imagined myself here.
In “Birthday Party,” Katharine Brush’s purpose for writing the short story was to reveal how something that is good can go so wrong. She also demonstrates how some things are not what they seem. Especially in the situation that she wrote. Her purpose from the beginning to end is demonstrated by the use of literary devices. Brush begins by describing the scenario, she states, “They sat on the banquette opposite us.”
The novel ‘Nada’ written by Carmen Laforet is a twisted heart-breaking tale about a year in the life of the 18-year-old female protagonist Andrea. Throughout this year, Andrea spends in Barcelona with her relatives, she developed various relationships, both homosexual and heterosexual. For the purpose of this essay I will discuss Andrea’s highly affective homosexual relationships with her best friend Ena and her aunt Gloria and how she views and describes both woman differently. I will also briefly contrast her homosexual relationships with that of her heterosexual relationships with Pons and her uncle Román. I will begin with discussing Adrea’s relationship with Gloria, as this relationship began before her relationship with Ena did.
Her personal experience is socially and theoretically constructed and emotions play an essential role in the process of identity formation. Her identity is not fixed, which is portrayed by inquisitiveness that her own mother and Aunt thought she was possessed, enhanced and made this story an enriching experience. The family is the first agent of socialization, as the story illustrates, even the most basic of human activities are learned and through socialization people
