In the story “The Stolen Party” by Liliana Heker, a girl named Rosaura is invited to a party by her best friend Luciana. She tells her mom many things about the party. Her mom does not think that she should go because it is a “rich peoples” party. The day of the party Rosaura finds that her mom has starched her dress. Later her mother washes her hair and rinses it with apple vinegar. When she arrives at the party she asks Luicana about the monkey. Luciana tells her that the monkey is in the kitchen, but she doesn't want her to tell anyone. Rosaura goes to the kitchen, and the monkey is there. This shows that Luciana does not care if Rosaura knows about the monkey. She just wants it to be a surprise for the guests. The following examples foreshadow that Rosaura was only invited as a maid. After when Rosaura speaks to the girl with the bow, the girl with the boy does not believe that Rosaura is Luciana’s friend because she does not know her. Another example is when Senora Ines asks Rosaura to carry the refreshments. In addition, Rosaura wins the sack race, and nobody manages to catch her when they played tag. This foreshadows that nobody was trying to catch her because she was only invited as the maid. After the magician asks Rosaura to help her by saying, “you with the Spanish eyes.” This foreshadows that she is different from everybody else. Similarly the author uses symbolism to show the rest of Rosaura’s life. An example is the monkey and his cage. The monkey resembles Rosaura and the cage represents Rosaura’s future as a maid. Rosaura is trapped in her future as a maid. Consequently, the reader still thinks that Rosaura is having a good time at the party, despite of all the work she
