The play “A Mid-Summer Nights Dream” by William Shakespeare is a play that I enjoyed reading and feel like is suitable for the grade nine curriculum because it helps learn literary devices, has intriguing and relatable themes and is funny and light-hearted. This play helped me learn dramatic literary devices to better understand the play. First, when we began to read the play I found it difficult to understand what some of the characters were trying to say but, it began to make more sense to me when I realized what literary devices they were speaking in. For example, when Egeus said to Hermia “to you your father should be as god” I was very confused, I thought that Hermia was supposed to worship her father, but I learned that it was actually a simile that was used to illustrate how Hermia was supposed to respect a lot and obey her father. It also gave me an inside to the Elizabethan era and how women were supposed to act towards men. Firstly, love was one of the main themes in this play. Love is also a topic that is on most teenagers minds a lot so this way there is a connection with the play. To explain in the play Demetrius was first in love with Helena, but two days later he just left Helena and was ready to marry Hermia. Many teens can relate to this as they could have experienced their past lover leaving them for someone else. Moreover, the theme of magic was also touched upon in this play which I personally found very interesting and I liked as it kept me engaged in the play. For example, I found it fascinating how there were fairies in this play and how they had magical powers like when Robin Goodfellow also known as Puck took advantage of his magical powers and turned Nick Bottom’s head into a literal
