“Brian’s Winter” is written by Gary Pulsen and was first published in January 1996. The story does not show when does this take place however, this story shows the transition from fall to winter. The story is told in the third person. There is only one main character in the book in which is Brian. This is because he is stranded alone in the Canadian wilderness, with some knowledge of how to survive in the forest.
Whilst others may fail to agree, “The Possessive” by Sharon Olds is the most compelling because of the use of figurative language. The author emphasizes the conflicts of a distant parental relationship that leads to further strain on one's connection. First and foremost, by using figurative language, such as similes and metaphors, the author has added a more enthralling aspect to the poem. One simile in particular that stands out is when the narrator describes the new haircut her daughter received. “The blade of new bangs hangs over her red-brown eyes like carbon steel”(Olds, lines 7-8).
“That Bitter Dream” Minnesota is known for its cold weather; F. Scott Fitzgerald's short story "winter dreams" takes place in Black Butte Lake, Minnesota. Dexter, the protagonists, is a fourteen-year-old caddy at the Golf Club. Dexter falls in love with eleven-year-old Judy Jones, and looks forward to have her. After some time when he is twenty-three years old, they start dating. Though Judy tricks Dexter and goes with another guy.
Imagery and tone plays a huge role for the author in this poem. It’s in every stanza and line in this poem. The tone is very passionate, joyful and tranquil.
All three poems of Hayden were sort of sad from my point of view. In all three poems he reflects how much unappreciated and mistreated African American were by those who believed to own them. Not only that, but in the poem Middle Passage, he says, “That the burning blacks could not be reached, that the Crew abandoned ship” (Hayden, 1962, p. 2374) which basically means they didn’t care enough to go back for them or even try to get them out of there, instead they decided to abandon the ship and leave them to die. Another event to point out in this poem is the last part of the passage which is how they were taking slaves from the Habana and when they killed almost all them, those left were able to steer the ship directly to the American where even though at the beginning they were retain and incarcerated, they were able to gain their freedom and put Cinquez’ or the Prince’s reputation at uncertainty.
I also feel like that one sentence alone shows you how much thinking you have to do when reading his poems. I did some reading on some of his other poems and they all are worded the same way. “The Raven” is so unique because of how dark it is. In my opinion this poem is really touching and sad at the same time because it teaches you about how bad grief can affect you. I mean the passing of his wife might have had something to do with the way he acted but you never really
Over the last couple of days in class we have discussed F. Scott Fitzgerald’s short story “Winter Dreams”. This short story explores several themes such as reality vs idealism and over expectations. These themes communicates through the use of various literary devices such as irony, symbolism, allegories and imagery. Through the use of these literary devices each character is brought to life and given its own type of personality. One quote that explores how the main character, Dexter, is given a unique personality states “The helpless ecstasy of losing himself in her charm was a powerful opiate rather than a tonic”.
I love all the metaphors he made in this poem such as the ladder to heaven (apple-picking requires a level which Robert Frost was referring it to the ladder to heaven) and the seasonal interpretation (winter is death and spring is rebirth) that connects to the natural process of decaying and
Both “Magi” and “Those Winter Sundays” deal with the intense feelings and emotions that both the parent and child endure. The poets of these literary pieces try to give words and phrases a deeper meaning that brings their own purpose along with them. In these poems, the use of the word “cold” has a lasting effect on the reader. The poem by Hayden starts with the line “Got up early/and put his clothes on in the blue/black cold” (Hayden 1-2). This imagery of a cold winter conveys the feeling of extreme cold to the reader, representing physical hardship.
“Those Winter Sundays” uses a fair amount of symbols. For example, the cold that he feels symbolizes what his father endured to make everything warm. The cold represents the hard work and love that the father has for his children. The warmth that is produced is only from the efforts of the father. “My Papa’s Waltz” also uses a handful of symbols throughout the poem.
“Those Winter Sundays” by Robert Hayden has much significance throughout it, the poem is generally about an adult reflecting back to his childhood having regrets for not appreciating his father's love. Hayden describes a father to son relationship for the reader. This poem can be similar to the quote “ you don’t what you’ve got until it's taking away” Hayden uses imagery, diction, and emotional appeal to make it relatable to the readers. Hayden writes this poem figuratively using imagery to provide the reader with a vivid ideal for example “Blueback cold” shows imagery of how cold those winter Sundays really were, and “Blueblack cold can also be used metaphorically here to describe the bruise on the child heart from the feeling of thinking he was unloved throughout his childhood. All love is shown in a different manner you just have to understand the
“Winter Dreams” was published in 1926. Francis Scott Fitzgerald is most well-known for his novel “The Great Gatsby”. A common theme he is known for is the American dream and how it is corrupt. Fitzgerald enjoys writing about the poor boy chasing after the rich girl. This story is about a man named Dexter Green trying to achieve the American dream by obtaining the girl he adores.
Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) was an organization that allowed me to expand my horizons and interact with people of various backgrounds. It built my communications skills and taught me how to connect with people who have different experiences than me. Not only was I able to establish a relationship with these people, but I was able to work well with them as well. This highlighted my ability to collaborate with people of differing opinions and still have the ability to be successful in our tasks. HOSA also pushed me out of my comfort zone slightly by putting me in new situations, such as forcing me to expand my circle and connect with new people.
The plums that he talks about in this poem draws you in. The way that he talks about the plums would make you want one. He makes them sound so juicy and mouthwatering. In the third stanza lines 2-4, it says, “they were delicious and sweet and so cold”. From the beginning of the poem you already knew that the plums were cold cause it says in the first stanza
