Romeo and Juliet is one of the most recognizable stories in literature. It uses literary devices like foreshadowing, metaphors, and symbolism to represent the theme of love that is so overpowering and all-consuming it will destroy the deepest bonds of loyalty. This theme can relate to the modern world in many different ways like celebrity scandals, Tv shows, and movies that still continue to follow the theme of this play. The sun is constantly mentioned in the play. The sun is almost a way to represent trouble an occurrence of something bad. The sun is used as a symbol of light in tons of other stories but the way Shakespeare uses it in this story is unique. The sun is a symbol of terrible fate. Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy so hidden by a love story. The sun is a great symbolization being symbolized as something bright and warm but if you get too close it will burn you. Romeo states “In act 2 scene 2, “But soft, what light through yonder window breaks? - It is the East, and Juliet is the Sun.” (lines 1-2, Shakespeare). Another form of symbolism is heat. Heat is supposed to symbolize danger. When Benvolio states “In act 3 scene 1-2, “I pray thee, good Mercutio, let’s retire. The day is hot, the Capels are abroad,” (lines 1-2, Shakespeare). Benvolio knows this sign because of how people react to the heat. It’s like when a mother may say “go outside it’s too hot to be inside.” so in modern terms Benvolio is saying everyone is out and when everyone is out trouble will only begin.
