Davishmar Hicks Ela In, “The Lottery,” by , “Shirley Jackson,” many themes are introduced. We are focusing on the mysterious theme. The mysterious theme is clearly developed. It’s develpoed by little things and behaviors of the people of the village.
Shirley Jackson created a short story by the name of “The Lottery”, which was published by The New Yorker in 1948. “The Lottery” talks about a community in which the villagers gather once a year on June 27th to have a village wide lottery. The head of households are called by surname and pick a slip of paper from a black box that has been used for generations as per tradition. When a family has been chosen by the lottery, each member participates in a family lottery. Once a family member is chosen by a black dot on their paper slip, the family, excluding the chosen family member, joins the community once again, and the community comes together to stone to death the “winner”.
Sometimes, traditions are not always meant to be carried on. Especially when they become outdated. Jackson writes, “Although the villagers had forgotten the ritual and lost the original black box, they still remembered to use the stones.” This is stating that they were not even doing it for the original reason. They were only doing it because they were so set on traditions.

When the lottery begins, families begin to draw slips of paper from the black box. Finally, when Bill Hutchinson withdrew the slip of paper with the black dot, his wife Tessie starts yelling that it wasn 't fair. When the second drawing was held only among the Hutchinson’s family, Tessie gets the same piece of paper with the dot and is stoned to death.

When it comes, they like to celebrate it with the correct rules and the correct objects so they can feel more comfortable. Everyone need to take a slip of paper from a small black box, and the paper with a black dot in it means that the family is the winner, then they raffle again; Bill Hutchinson, who was the husband of the protagonist Tessie Hutchinson picked a paper with a black dot in it, that meant that Tessie was the winner of the lottery, then she starts complaining because the drawing was not conducted properly. At the end, the townspeople moved off to a cleared spot outside the town and they begin stoning her to death (Jackson).

What I found most compelling about short stories is that the readers are never truly at the beginning a story, they are just magically put into a scene. Furthermore, the authors have very few characters, the plots are not so complex and narrative is concise. I loved how Jackson used actions instead of heavy dialogue in the story to give the readers information about the characters, for example, when Tessie Hutchinson arrives late to the lottery, she enters loud and frazzled, unlike the others who are very clam and always arrive early. On June 27th on a late summer morning, the villagers of a small New England village gatherd together in the town square to conduct their annual lottery. There is a black box on a stool and in the box there is pieces of paper in the box. Each person from a family get one paper from the black box even the children get a piece of paper and every stayed quiet and nervouse.
