This paper examines similarities to and differences between the LTL Trucking case and biblical teaching. It will offer methods for leaders to shape a culture of forgiveness. Additionally, biblical connections will be drawn to LTL’s methods of fostering forgiveness. Finally, a sampling of current literature addressing forgiveness will be presented.
LTL Trucking’s reflection of forgiveness versus Scripture LTL Trucking had a defensive environment, and John and Sam’s situation was an example. With regard to relationships, Scripture teaches, “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together…” (Hebrews 10:24-25a, NASB). Likewise, positive communication is valued in Scripture, “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” (Ephesians 4:29, NASB). Finally, commitment to justice is connected to one’s relationship with the Father, “But you must return to your God; maintain love and justice, and wait for your God always.” (Hosea, 12:6, NASB).
LTL Trucking’s values in current business/organizational literature Literature supports fostering forgiveness in the workplace. The common theme is that perceptions and expectations determine one’s willingness forgive (Okimoto & Wenzel, 2014). Studies also show that organizational forgiveness results in a lifestyle of forgiveness, positively impacting employees’ personal relationships (Barclay & Saldanha, 2016). Finally, Satici explained that forgiveness is directly connected to gratefulness, and these together impact one’s psychological and physical health (Satici , Uysal, & Akin, 2014).
