The significance of the preface and letters is to set up a plot with a twist. Walton’s letters introduce an important character, Walton himself. It introduces many ideas that will show up in the novel. The letters foreshadow upcoming events in the novel. The letters foreshadow things such as feelings and themes such as, loneliness which is shown in the second letter. Chapter one Victor Frankenstein is the narrating the story. The story takes place in the eighteenth century in St. Petersburg, Russia. He is hiring a crew for a ship. He intends to sail the North Pole and discover magnetism. The ship is stuck in ice and fog. When Frankenstein’s father found him, he was near death. His daughter, Caroline came with him on this journey. After finding out about Beaufort’s death Caroline turned to Master Frankenstein for comfort. The two returned to Geneva and married not too long after that. Beaufort is Caroline Beaufort’s father. He eventually fell into poverty as a merchant and died. Elizabeth Lavenza was an orphan child taken in by the Frankenstein family. She has fair skin and golden hair. Her parents died and she was an orphan. She came to live with the Frankenstein family because she was poor. Victor describes Elizabeth as his most beautiful, valuable possession as a child. She was an object of his unquestioning worship. Victor sees his childhood as a happy one. He remembers how his parents loved him dearly. Victor admits to having a bad temper, but also acknowledges that he had a thirst for learning. Henry Clerval is a friend of Victor. He comes to Ingolstadt and helps Victor become healthy again.
