2 Years of Loneliness Have you ever been lonely for two whole years in a row?! This play, The Diary of Anne Frank was a true story written by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett. The main characters of this play are Anne Frank and her dad, Otto Frank. Anne and her family are Jewish, and because of that, they have to hide in a small annex in Amsterdam from Hitler and his army in World War 2. The rising action starts when everyone exposes their personality by actions and words. The climax happens when Peter Van Daan drops a lampshade which is heard by the thief in the building at nighttime. All the Jews in the annex are frightened to death and worry about their survival. Anne asks Mr. Dussel, “Do you know the De Waals?...What’s become of them?Their daughter Jopie and I are in the same class. Jopie’s my best friend” (Scene 3, Paragraph 317). Mr. Dussel then replies, “They are gone. With all the others” (Scene 3, Paragraph 318,320). This happens when Mr. Dussel first moves in and tells everyone what’s happening outside and how all the Jews are randomly disappearing. This means so much to Anne because she lost her friends and lost hope. Jopie was her only and best friend, and now that she realizes Jopie is gone, she turns away in tears. Anne and her mother are having a fight and Mrs. Frank tells Anne to be like Margot and she gets annoyed. Her mother says, “It isn’t necessary to fight to do it. Margot doesn’t fight, and isn’t she…?” (Scene 3, Paragraph 206). Anne then replies, “Everything she does is right, and everything I do is wrong! I’m the goat around here!...You’re all against me!...And you worst of all!” (Scene 3, Paragraph 209). This shows that Anne and her mother’s relationship is weak, and Anne gets furious when people compare her to Margot. It shows that she can’t express her feelings to anyone because they don’t understand her which leads to loneliness. Anne is even more lonely because she has no one to talk and play with and keeps wishing Peter was a girl instead of a boy. In her diary, she even said, “I keep wishing Peter was a girl instead of a boy. Then I would have someone to talk to. Margot’s a darling, but she takes everything too seriously” (Scene 3, Paragraph 365). Anne really wishes Peter was a girl, because if he was, she thought herself as less lonely than before. Now that Peter a boy, she is so lonely, and on top of that, Anne and Peter have gotten into fights and arguments. Anne is lonely because she has no one to talk to and play
