The book, Of Mice and Men contain many themes throughout the story. One major theme includes loneliness. This is a major theme that is not only included throughout the book as a whole but, more specifically throughout the two passages. The theme of loneliness is explained in Passage A in many ways. One way that is related is when the passage talks about the different animals coming and going throughout the setting. It gives the sense of loneliness and how quiet and calm everything is. Then it brings in whom we later find out is Lennie and George. This is known because in the passage it quotes: “The first man was small and quick, dark of face, with restless eyes and sharp, strong features. The theme is portrayed by more than just one character in the book. One character besides, Lennie and George who portrayed loneliness is, Crooks. Due to the fact of Crooks being African American on a ranch full of whites one can tell the sense of discrimination and loneliness from him. One theme throughout the book when Lennie comes into Crooks room where he stays Crooks at the beginning gets very defensive and tries to make Lennie leave. This is so because none of the other men respect Crooks so he isn’t use to people being generally nice to him. He is use to being all alone all day when he works. Another character throughout the book that represents loneliness is, Curley’s Wife. It is stated throughout the whole book how Curley always tries to talk to the other men on the ranch. The men call Curley’s Wife names such as: “jailbait” or a “tart”. None of the other men seem to take her seriously or understand her except for Lennie. Curley’s Wife is always alone since Curley is always working and looking over the ranch. Curley’s Wife usually didn’t have anyone to talk too throughout the whole book.
