Alcoholism has been around for many years. This is an addiction that can be easily contracted. Becoming an alcoholic can start at any point of an individual’s life. This addiction can have many consequences on the person who suffers from it. These consequences include increased health risks, ruined relationships between friends and family, poor school performance, and making one socially unstable without the consumption of alcohol. In this essay I will discuss these negative effects of alcoholism.
An increase in health risks is the most damaging effects caused by the addiction of alcohol. Alcoholics may not notice any health problem at first; however, the long-term consumption of alcohol can lead several health problem or death in the future. High blood pressure, heart disease, liver disease, digestive problems, cancer, and more are all long-term health problems that can develop in people addicted to alcohol. Alcoholics are also in great danger of short-term health risks. Examples are catching a disease during a sexual intercourse, causing a car wreck, and being involved in a violent act. Most alcoholics would rather spend time drinking instead of being with their friends or family. Also, people who are addicted to alcohol do not attend many family gatherings due to their addiction. Alcoholics also show extreme emotion. These emotions can be very violent towards a friend or a family member, causing the loved one to fear the alcoholic. In addition, most alcoholics are very selfish when intoxicated. This can have a very negative impact at the alcoholic’s job. Lying is also another problem that many alcoholics have. Most alcoholics tend to lie to people that they know in order to cover up or soften up how serious their addiction really
