In Gary Soto’s short story “The Talk” he reveals how society values appearance way too much. The main characters discuss about how their appearance affects their self-esteem, mindset, and their future jobs. The characters start out discussing their appearance and call themselves ugly, “We were twelve, with lean bodies that were beginning to grow in weird ways. First, our heads got large, but our necks wavered, frail as crisp tulips” (par.2). The boys talk about their appearance as if they were really awkward when in reality they probably don’t look like the way their describing themselves.
Most of the time people use race as a big role when viewing other people, either if were walking down the street or walking into the store. Individuals have a specific view of people from other races and even their own. For example, a black businesswoman might stereotype another woman from her own race because she may not have the same attire as her or grew up in a different area. A white businesswoman might look down on another white woman who makes less money than her like she is a no one, which is not true as all humans are equal and money does not make anybody greater.
Have you ever judged someone,but said you don’t judge people on the way they look. I’m going to be getting examples from “The Minister’s Black Veil” that will show when people judge others. In the story Mr.Hooper began to wear a black veil and people began to judge him. In real life when someone does something out of the ordinary people begin to judge them. The moral of the story is that everyone is judgemental.
Conformity Conformity is the behavior in accordance with socially accepted standards, rules, or laws. Conformity is expressed in the play Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand, in the two characters of Cyrano and Christian. Cyrano is insecure about his outside appearance and Christian’s insecurity is on the inside. Conformity creates justice and equality, but if rejected that leads to an individual having self esteem issues, and a society where there is no individuality. Conformity creates justice and equality in a society because of the laws and standards set to keep people safe and secure.
I believe this relates to my thesis because society judges more from the looks of people, than on how the person acts or behaves towards other
I personally have been in that situation where people would judge me just base on the way I look or what religion I may follow. Everyone has an idea of other people till they actually meet them. It can be a life changing and makes you look at things a whole lot different. Thin slicing, I got this evidence from the book Blink. I think it’s a perfect example of judging a person on their appearance.
This situation becomes even worse for women, as much as jobs are not suppose to employ you base on your appearance, this is something very much looked at when it comes to women. Men are lot easier to dissimulate and not pay much attention to when it comes to wardrobe but women are a hitting target at getting looked down
Humans are very judgmental. They judge people and things depending on how they look, how they dress and how they act. They even judge situations and giving it the wrong impression. They base judgement on things that could’ve happened in their past or even the present. They probably grew up under judgements of other people.
Why do so many people feel the need to judge others based on how they look? Judging others gives people a sense of honor because demeaning others can create a sense of security and identity. If one concludes who a person is merely on what they look like they will miss what is important, what their morals are, and what their intentions are. It takes an individual who has read the novel To Kill A Mockingbird to understand because it is a perfect example of treating others with respect and not determining who others are based on what they look like. We don’t realize that we stereotype others based on their physical appearances and we act very racial towards others, it just comes natural. I believe that humans should take the time to reevaluate their actions when it comes to racial thoughts and prejudice attitudes. Everybody is different. Not everyone has the same beliefs and morals therefore everyone will behave differently. Stereotypes often lead to negative actions, but we have no control.
The definition of Prejudice is, “An unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without knowledge, thought, or reason”(Dictionary.com) The majority of humans tend to judge others by appearance rather than personality. Examples derive from culture and treatment of African American people and how others perceive them to be. Prejudice and appearance are prevalent in Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein as well as today’s culture which has consequences regarding race, age, religion, etc. In Frankenstein, the monster is a hideous, vicious being of large stature who has the potential to cause injury, so he is perceived to be malicious due to these characteristics.
It takes the average person under a minute to compose an opinion about someone they recently encountered. This opinion will be the image inside your head until you genuinely get to understand that person., but judgement with still occur because humans do this for an eccentric reason. People have stereotypes that go along with judging through age class, for example, adults stereotype judging teenagers as persistently staring at their phones all day, rarely interacting with anyone face to face. This exhibits irony; children and teenagers perceive their parents to be infallible. There are many differences between adults and teens.
Standards and expectations of attractiveness for males and females are very different from culture/country to culture even from person to person in the same city let alone country to country. Also we as individuals find different things attractive and this concept of what is or is not attractive, is started at a very young age whether or not it was influenced by the media, our peers, our families or our own thoughts and feelings everyone has their own idea of what is physically and personality attractiveness but most people do share some common traits. This idea gets molded throughout your life and changes many times. So why is it that different cultures have such drastic differences in what is considered attractive but still hold some common traits around the world is it because of society, environment they are in, media, family or religion.
Community colleges are intended to be a journey to achieve bigger opportunities and possibly move on to a four-year university. Unfortunately, many students are not reaching the end of that journey. These colleges are structured in a way that is not allowing enough students to succeed. Easy alterations can be made to change this fact and a number of states are now taking on this challenge. Improving certain aspects of community colleges will ensure the graduation of more students.
“Maybe she’s born with it. Maybe it’s Maybelline.” This slogan has been heard in every Maybelline makeup commercial and presents its viewers with women with unrealistically long eyelashes, flawless skin and fully glossed lips. But have we ever stopped to consider the message that these commercials entail? Could these Maybelline models have stumbled upon a full face of makeup that could be mistaken as a natural look?
