Lord of the Flies This book was written by William Golding and it was his most acclaimed novel after twenty-one rejections. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1983, twenty-nine years after Lord on the Flies was published. Golding was born in 1911 and attended the same school as his father, Marlborough Grammar School. At twelve he attempted to write his first novel but failed. He found an outlet for his anger in bullying. He went as far as to say “I enjoyed hurting people.” That might be some of the explanation behind all of his cruel vivid imagery in the book. Later Golding attended Brasenose College at Oxford University. His father hoped he would be a scientist but Golding studied English literature instead. A year before he graduated he published his first book entitled Poems, it was overlooked by critics. After college he decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and began teaching English and philosophy. His experience teaching ornery boys would serve as inspiration for Lord of the Flies. In this book William Golding uses many symbols, lots of imagery and continues to distinguish between civilization and savagery. Just like in school, kids form groups. On the island they have the group of “littluns” and “biguns”. The first thing of civilization would be to organize, so one of the main characters, Ralph, called a meeting by blowing a conch. Later the conch becomes a sign of authority which is a significant part of civilization. Ralph figuratively becomes the head of civilization, then there is Jack.
