Human’s True Nature or Are Humans essentially Good or Bad?
Someone may look and act like the nicest person in the world. However, looks can be deceiving and he/she is most likely evil on the inside. It is humans’ natural tendency to resort to or partake in bad actions, whether it is shown through taking the easy way out, the art of manipulation, or through acting upon emotion rather than logic. In Lord of the Flies, a group of boys crash land on a deserted island without any adult supervision and are forced to recreate their own society to survive. Instead of surviving together, the boys end up torn between two leaders and their choices reveal who they truly are. As time goes by, his evil side begins to emerge and his main focus on the island becomes blood and control. During Jack’s conversation with his tribe, he explains his overall scheme along with his ulterior motive: “’ We might go later to the Castle Rock. But now I’m going to get more of the biguns away from the conch and all that. We’ll kill a pig and give a feast”’ (Golding 133). Although Jack already has a tribe, he is still not satisfied and wants to destroy the civilization Ralph has created. Jack reveals he is a master of disguise and will gain the trust of Ralph’s tribe by having a feast before transforming them into savages. Now that the boys on the island are hunting Ralph, Samneric warn Ralph about Jack’s upcoming danger: “’ They’re going to hunt you tomorrow… I dunno. And Ralph, Jack, the chief, says it’ll be dangerous-“’ (Golding 188). Jack instills a profound amount of fear in the boys that they refer to him as chief, even though they know Ralph is better suitable as chief. Jack takes advantage of his view in the society and uses his influence to revolt against Ralph out of petty, personal reasons.
