Have you ever been traumatized so much that you stopped believing in faith, a thing that you have looked to your whole life? In the memoir Night by Elie Wiesel, he describes his own traumatizing experiences in the camps. He tells his story through the character Eliezer. Eliezer is a regular 14-year-old boy living in Sighet with his mom, dad, and sisters. Eliezer is supper faithful and always looks to God for advice. But one day his life changed forever, he gets held captive in Auschwitz. One of the largest concentration camps used to exterminate Jews in the 1940s. Through these traumatic experiences, Eliezer starts to lose God. Eliezer never regains the same faith as in the beginning. At the begging of this memoir, Eliezer is so faithful he goes to the poorest person in town to teach him about Kabbalah: “Together we would read, over and over again, the same page of the Zohar. Not to learn it by heart but to discover within the very essence of divinity” (Wiesel 5). This quote is showing how Eliezer was so eager to find out more about his faith and just wants to learn more. But, as time went on “I did not fast… And then, there was no longer any reason for me to fast. I no longer accepted God’s silence ”(69). This is showing Elizer stopped feeling hope because of the circumstance that he is in and the harsh situation he is living
