Lost Voices Activist Group Analysis

On October 28, I attended the Lost Voices of Ferguson panel in Valhalla. The Lost Voices are an activist group that originally formed during the protests for the Mike Brown case in Ferguson, Missouri. Each one of them witnessed the shooting in their own way, from watching it on the news in a completely different town to being right in Ferguson and seeing parts of Mike’s brain. There were 9 of them total, including their camera man Chuck, who had been following them for the past year, joining their mission. Some of them were high school students while others were middle-aged parents. The overall goal for the Lost Voices is to promote social change and end police brutality all in a non-violent manner. While this group started in Ferguson, their overall mission is to change the nation. In 14 months after Ferguson, they have already started making a huge impact on communities everywhere, even our very own campus community. At the end of their panel, there was an open discussion. When someone asked how you start a protest, they asked us what’s something we disagreed with that was currently happening. Overall, the audience was against concealed carry. The Lost Voices then took this new information and started a protest. I followed from a distance, mostly to see what their work was truly like. We marched around the majority of the school grounds yelling “no guns on our campus.” Many people looked out the windows of dorms and academic buildings, mostly posting on social media what was happening. When we got to the edge of campus, I thought they were going to stop us. It was after 9:30 on a Thursday and this was just a demonstration. I couldn’t have been more wrong.
