Recommended: Marianne Moore's ideas on writing poetry
In lines 15-16, “the last bat/ Now cruises in his sharp hieroglyphics”, the poet incorporates imagery and diction in these lines to allow the reader to visualize the flight of the bat in the night sky. Hieroglyphics is an ancient writing that may seem intricate or complicated to one. The poet uses this very word to describe man’s complicated character, how he may appear like he’s one way but in actuality is another, how he may appear good but is actually bad on the inside. Because the bat takes his flight during the night when nobody can see, man’s true character is hidden within himself where only he himself can see it.
Poetry Analysis All over the world there are diverse authors who want to represent their feeling in the various types of writings. One of the most frequently used classifications of writing can include poetry; a composition that represents a feeling on a specific topic that is meant to be read or listened to. As stated before, there are hundreds of different poems, yet two of my favorite poems can include “The Tyranny of a Nice or Suburban Girl” by Sarah J. Liebman and “Autobiography in Five Short Chapters” by Portia Nelson. Although both of these poems possess powerful tones as well as structures that are able to pass the meaning of the poem to the reader, the two of them are very different when it comes to figurative language.
In a letter to his brother, the great painter, Vincent Van Gogh, once wrote,“Poetry surrounds us everywhere, but putting it on paper is, alas, not so easy as looking at it”. In this quote, Van Gogh summarizes a subject great writers like Ralph Waldo Emerson has devoted entire essays to defining and explaining, and that is the subject of poetry. As it can be seen, a poet undertakes that almost impossible job of transposing what he or she sees in Nature on to paper for others to read. Only a true poet can be successful in an attempt. It is not just Nature a poet tries to capture into words, but also social experiences and human truths.
This poetry essay examines the techniques used by three poets to create meaning and impact in their work. Through careful analysis of the poet's use of language, imagery, and other literary devices, it becomes easy to gain a deeper understanding of the role of poetry in people's lives and its ability to evoke emotion, paint pictures, and convey ideas.
The Poem “The Poet” by Tom Wayman is a poem that takes the reader through the physical characteristics of your average poet. The entirety of the “The Poet” consists of a list of 14 descriptors that could be used to describe the typical poet. Each of the descriptive phrases seems to be negative towards the unknown poet that he is talking about. Although the poem seems quite literal, a figurative message is portrayed though text, tone, structure and the literary devices used in the poem. To start off, the specific word usage that Wayman chose to use gives off the impression that poets have their drawbacks.
Poetry is used as a completely separate language on how someone can prompt him or herself, voice their opinions on topics, as well as generate something a person can enjoy reading and writing. What formulates poetry exclusive is that it takes ideas and puts them into humble linguistic that the bookworm can understand and relate to via emotion and imagery. It can also use techniques such as personification, apostrophe, repetition, rhythm etc. in order to form a comprehensible and innovative poem. However, poetry in its form can also be a mystery in how to interpret what the poem’s involvement is or what the connotation behind or the subject of the poem.
Julia Alvarez, in her poem “’Poetry Makes Nothing Happen’?”, writes that poems do play a role in people’s lives. She supports her idea by using relateable examples of how poems might change someone’s life. Her first example is simple, poetry can entertain someone on long drives. This does not only aply to long dirves however, Alvarez uses this to show that poetry does not have to have a big influence on someone’s life, instead it can affect a person in the smallest of ways, such as entertainment. The second example describes poetry comforting someone after the loss of a loved one.
Poets use the art of words to convey the emotions they want to express. When a poet creates sentences using metaphors and other techniques, they can be used to be interpreted anyway that you would like. A lot of people use poetry as an outlet to express what they may not be able to express otherwise. It is an easy way to get feelings across and a lot of people can view it as many different things. With the strong negativity people are facing in this society, poems are a way to get your feelings across and understand how others are feeling as well.
Society, for centuries, has revered poetry for its beauty, philosophy, and unique capability to reveal truth to the individual. One of the most prominent time periods that display society’s acclaim for poetry was within the Romantic period. Romanticism, according to the New World Encyclopedia, was “an artistic and intellectual movement that ran from the late eighteenth century through the nineteenth century. It stressed strong emotion as a source of aesthetic experience” (New World Encyclopedia, 2015). Romanticism glorified art, poetry, music, and nature.
In “The Trouble with Poetry” the speaker touches on the same idea of how poetry is so forced, and how it has lost its meaning as an expression and has become more of an addiction among
Diane Ackerman, in her excerpt from “In Praise of Bats,” wants readers to recognize that life is beautifully strange, and it is the small moments that count. Ackerman takes on a gentle, calm tone to get her message across; to do this, she gives readers vivid imagery of bats, relating them to the beauty and abstractness of life. With the short-lived event of the event of the emergence of bats, Ackerman develops her meaning that the miniscule, seemingly insignificant moments in life is what we should look forward to the most. Ackerman introduces her excerpt with the brief description of her pet bats, Zuri and Rafiki: Zuri licking the “human essence” off of himself in an effort to show that he is distinct from the author and reader.
Some comes in anger moments. Some comes in tragic moments. Almost every poem hides the richness value of author’s thoughts. One read poems to understand the world of which people dreams of. One read poems to explore the mysterious secrets.
Poetry is a piece of literature where the author shares his ideas of a subject or person. He is attempting to allow the reader an understanding of his feelings regarding this subject. Most of the time poetry can be very pleasing to the ear; however, at times it can be written in a manner that is odd. Some poetry is written in a way that the reader can “hear”, “feel”, “see” or “taste” elements in the poem. Some poems may rhyme while others may not need to in order to convey the message.
“Poetry is ordinary language raised to the Nth power. Poetry is bonded with ideas, nerved and blooded with emotions, all held together by the delicate, tough skin of words,”(Paul Engle). Poetry covers all spectrums of life, whether it encompasses morality, love, death, or finding ones true self. When reading poetry one may stumble across pure brilliance, words so powerful they have the ability challenge the mind. Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman have that such gift, and are nothing short of illustrious.
