Lucy Stone was an American suffragist, she was well known and accomplished anti-slavery speaker who supported the women’s rights. As in one of her quotes she said “ I think with never-ending gratitude, that the young women of today do not and can never know at what price their right to free speech and to speak at all in public has been earned.”, which means that she does not know when women’s rights to speak at all in public is going to be earned or women’s rights itself. Lucy Stone was an important figure in American History because she dedicated her life to woman’s rights and her job as an american suffragist.
She was born on August 13, 1818, in Westbrook Field, Massachusetts. Her parents were Francis Stone and Hannah Matthews. In 1839 Lucy attended Mount Holyoke Seminary for just one term. Four years later she enrolled at Oberlin college in Ohio. The school did not offer a level playing field for women. So as a result, the college denied Stone the opportunity to pursue her passion in public speaking. But Stone still continued to pursue her passion. She paid her way through school and graduated in 1847 with honors, becoming the first woman of Massachusetts to earn a bachelor’s degree.
